Associationism

Associationism

This course sits inside the Emancipatory Education pillar of Wake Up Africa. That matters, because emancipatory education isn’t about handing someone information. It’s about handing someone the tools to see their own situation clearly and act on it. Associationism is the first of those tools.

Before any economy, any technology, any market, there is a prior decision. It’s the decision of human beings to come together. This course looks at association as the first real act of construction. It asks why people organise in the first place, what makes an association last while another one falls apart, and how the cooperative form turns scattered individual effort into something much bigger than the sum of its parts. It also draws a hard line between association built on dependence and association built on co-creation, where every member walks in with equal standing from day one.

What you walk away with: the ability to see association as construction, not charity, and the practical tools to design a cooperative where nobody is a beneficiary and everybody is an owner.

Lesson 1: The human need to associate Lesson 2: Forms of association through Lesson 3: The cooperative as a structure of equals Lesson 4: Trust, reciprocity, and rules that hold a group together Lesson 5: From association to movement
